New patient

Everything you need to know as a new patient: what a GP (fastlege) does, how to get us as your GP, how to use Helsenorge – and what we expect from you.

What does a GP do?

  • Your GP (fastlege) is your doctor for most things: illness, injuries, sick leave, long-term conditions, mental health, pregnancy and children.
  • Your GP gets to know you over time and refers you to a specialist or hospital when needed.
  • Everyone living in Norway has the right to a GP. You are on one doctor's list, but the other doctors here help you when your doctor is away.

Your appointment

When you come for an appointment – what we expect

A good appointment is teamwork. Here is what we ask of you – and what you can expect from us.

We ask you to

  • Be on time – ideally a few minutes early. If you are late, the appointment may be shorter or need to be moved.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before on Helsenorge or by phone. Otherwise you must pay the full price of the appointment.
  • Prepare one main issue. We understand there may sometimes be a couple of other things – mention them at the start. You cannot book a double appointment yourself. The doctor does as much as is safe in the time available and decides whether the rest needs a new appointment.
  • Bring your medication list and anything new since last time: letters, test results, questions you have written down.
  • Tell us if you need an interpreter when booking. We book a qualified interpreter – please do not use family or children.
  • Show respect to staff and other patients. We have zero tolerance for threats, violence and harassment.

You can expect us to

  • Listen to you and take your concerns seriously.
  • Explain what we think and what happens next.
  • Let you know if the doctor is running late.
  • Keep confidentiality – what you tell us stays between you and us.

What does it cost?

A regular appointment or e-consultation costs NOK 179 (patient charge). Children and young people under 18 and pregnant women do not pay. Once you have paid NOK 3,278 in patient charges in 2026, you get an exemption card (frikort) automatically.
