Contacting your doctor

Helsenorge, E-contact, e-consultation, phone and video – and what we expect when you come for an appointment.

Practical information

Helsenorge – your main way to reach your doctor

Helsenorge is the main way between you and your doctor. Here you book appointments, renew prescriptions, send E-kontakt and e-consultations, and receive test results and messages from your doctor – quickly, safely and without phone queues. You log in with BankID, Buypass or another approved electronic ID.

Many of our patients are not on Helsenorge yet. Please log in – then your doctor can reach you directly, which is much easier and safer than letters and phone calls.

E-contact or e-consultation?

Two different ways to write to us on helsenorge.no – choose the right one and you get help faster. How it works – and what to do when your doctor is away ↓

E-contact (E-kontakt)Free

→ To the office (medical secretaries)

  • Practical questions: appointments, certificates, patient transport and more.
  • Also use E-contact when there is no separate button for what you need on helsenorge.no.
E-consultation (E-konsultasjon)Patient fee 179 kr

→ To your doctor

  • Medical questions the doctor can assess without seeing you. You are welcome to attach photos.
  • The doctor may reply that you need an appointment, should use another service – or that it should have been an E-contact. Sometimes we convert it to an E-contact.
Is it urgent? Call us. Don't use E-contact or e-consultation when you need an answer the same day. Messages are not always read the same day, and a reply can take up to 5 working days. +47 64 80 29 29

Replies from your doctor

Results of blood tests and other examinations – such as X-rays, ultrasound and tests taken by a specialist or at the hospital – come from your doctor as a digital message on helsenorge.no. You get a text message when it has arrived.

Log in to helsenorge.no with BankID to read it.

Acting for others on helsenorge.no

You can use the services for yourself, for others who have given you power of attorney, and for your own children under 16. Switch to the right person before sending: to book for your child, send the message from the child's profile.

Can't find e-consultation? Go to «Profil og innstillinger – Bruk og tilganger – Personverninnstillinger» and choose «full».

Writing to your doctor

How to use e-consultation and E-contact

You can write to us on Helsenorge instead of calling. Here is how it works – and what happens when your doctor is away.

  1. Choose the right one

E-contact (free) goes to the secretaries: appointments, certificates and other practical matters. E-consultation (patient fee) goes to your doctor: medical questions the doctor can answer without seeing you.

  2. Keep it short and specific

What is it about, how long has it lasted, and what do you want to know? Feel free to attach a photo. One matter per message – if you have several, book an appointment instead.

  3. Reply within 5 working days

You get a text message when the reply has arrived. The doctor may answer directly, ask you to come in, or change the message to E-contact.

When your doctor is away – holiday, courses or illness

  • E-consultation is closed while your doctor is away. You will not find the button on Helsenorge, or you will be told it is closed.
  • Contact the office through E-contact or by phone +47 64 80 29 29. If you need a medical assessment or advice, we pass it on to the doctor in charge that day – you will get help even if your regular GP is away.
  • If it can wait, you will be told that your GP is away, and they will reply when they are back. Urgent the same day: urgent line +47 64 80 29 25. Evenings and weekends: out-of-hours clinic (legevakt) 116 117.
  • See who is at work on the front page: At work this week →

Not suitable for a message

  • Acute or serious symptoms – call us, or 113 if it is life-threatening.
  • Problems that need an examination – book an appointment.
  • Many questions at once – book an appointment and start with the most important one.

Phone and video consultation

  • We mostly use messages and phone. If you live far away or it is hard to come in, you can ask for a phone consultation when booking.
  • If the doctor needs to see you, we offer video: you get a link and can use your mobile phone.
  • Phone and video consultations cost the same as a regular appointment.

Got a reply from a junior doctor or locum?

Junior doctors in training (LIS1) and locums can send you replies on Helsenorge, but you cannot choose them or write to them directly. To reply or ask something, send an E-contact – the secretaries forward it to the right doctor.

Your appointment

When you come for an appointment – what we expect

A good appointment is teamwork. Here is what we ask of you – and what you can expect from us.

We ask you to

  • Be on time – ideally a few minutes early. If you are late, the appointment may be shorter or need to be moved.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before on Helsenorge or by phone. Otherwise you must pay the full price of the appointment.
  • Prepare one main issue. We understand there may sometimes be a couple of other things – mention them at the start. You cannot book a double appointment yourself. The doctor does as much as is safe in the time available and decides whether the rest needs a new appointment.
  • Bring your medication list and anything new since last time: letters, test results, questions you have written down.
  • Tell us if you need an interpreter when booking. We book a qualified interpreter – please do not use family or children.
  • Show respect to staff and other patients. We have zero tolerance for threats, violence and harassment.

You can expect us to

  • Listen to you and take your concerns seriously.
  • Explain what we think and what happens next.
  • Let you know if the doctor is running late.
  • Keep confidentiality – what you tell us stays between you and us.
